Looking to enhance your pout? With the perfect pout becoming more accessible nowadays you might be more conscious of the shape and plumpness of your lips. Whether you’re looking for big, pillowy lips or a subtle plump, you need to know exactly what you’re hoping to achieve and how to get it safely.
This post is all about what you need to know before getting lip injections.
1. Your injector’s skill level will play a huge role in your results.
We’ve all heard the stories about botched lip fillers by unqualified injectors. Do your research about your injector, their qualifications, years of experience, customer reviews, and look at before/after pictures of their work. Qualified injectors with years of experience have learned and practiced techniques to achieve specific results. Finding an injector that fits your needs and budget can be difficult, but fortunately, most clinics offer free consultations (we definitely recommend taking advantage of those!).
2. Lip fillers require maintenance.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are the most common fillers available on the market. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body, making it a safe and reversible (…if need be) option. Your body naturally metabolizes hyaluronic acid, which means it will break down your lip fillers over time. HA fillers typically last 6-8 months, but many patients find that their fillers last longer after years of maintaining them.
3. Getting your lips done isn’t cheap!
The price of the procedure depends on many factors; quality of the injector, brand of filler product, and amount of product needed to achieve desired results. As we talked about in #1, the experience of your injector can often give better results, but like everything else, you’ll be paying more for their expertise!
Hundreds of fillers are available on the market nowadays, some cheaper than others. Injectors will often use less known products when they have sale pricing since the product is cheaper. This allows them to have lower prices but maintain reasonable profit margins. Sometimes a cheaper product can raise some red flags, but not in all cases. There are tons of incredible fillers on the market that boast great results and praise from practitioners but are less widely known.
Finally, the amount of product you will need to accomplish the results you’re looking for will vary depending on your original lip shape and size.
4. Avoid alcohol and other blood thinners.
Natural blood thinners like alcohol, Vitamin E, fish oil, and aspirin are known to cause bruising and swelling on your lips. Every patient will have a different experience but it is not uncommon to see bruising and swelling regardless of blood thinners.
5. Your lips will be swollen after being injected.
Patients can experience swelling immediately after their injections and up to a week after their appointment. Typically swelling is the worst the first night after your appointment. Most injectors recommend waiting at least 2 weeks for the product to settle before making any decisions about the results.
